The town is famous for the Wigan Pier and the Wigan Casino, the mecca of Northern Soul. During the Industrial Revolution, Wigan was a busy mill town. Now it is in the process of an ambitious and exciting regeneration plan. The plans include greater efficiency for rail travel with the arrival of the planned HS2 link.
